Canada Study Permit: step-by-step

A Canadian study permit application must show admission to an eligible institution, sufficient funds and a credible temporary-study purpose.

Fees

Government application and biometrics fees apply. Financial requirements change, so use current IRCC figures rather than older SDS assumptions.

Timing

Timelines vary by application country and season and should be checked through Canada's official processing-time tool.

Work rights

Eligible students may work off campus within the hour limit printed in current regulations and full-time during qualifying scheduled breaks.

Application process

  1. STEP 01

    Confirm the institution and programme

Use a valid letter of acceptance and confirm current post-study work eligibility.

  2. STEP 02

    Secure required provincial documentation

Obtain a PAL or TAL where current rules require one.

  3. STEP 03

    Build the financial file

Show tuition, living and travel capacity with traceable funds.

  4. STEP 04

    Apply, complete biometrics and medicals

Upload a consistent file and complete requests within the deadlines.

Document checklist

  • Passport and letter of acceptance
  • PAL/TAL where applicable
  • Proof of tuition and living funds
  • Academic records and study plan
  • Medical and biometrics confirmations where required

Common questions

Is SDS still available?

Canada ended the Student Direct Stream in 2024. Applications now follow the regular study-permit process.

Does every programme qualify for a PGWP?

No. Institution, programme and field rules can affect eligibility, so confirm them before paying a deposit.
